What Is an Area Converter?

An area converter is an online tool that changes a measurement of surface from one unit to another, such as square meters to square feet or acres to hectares. Instead of memorising conversion factors or typing long multiplications into a calculator, you enter a value, choose your units and let the area converter show the answer immediately. Our area converter runs entirely inside your browser, so it responds as you type and never sends your numbers to a server.

Area describes how much flat space a shape covers: the floor of a room, a farm field, a residential plot, a solar panel or an entire country. Because regions and professions use different units, the same piece of land can be described in many ways. A plot of 500 square meters is also about 5,382 square feet, roughly 0.12 acres, or close to 20 marla. Every one of those numbers describes exactly the same space, and a reliable area converter lets you move between them without mistakes.

Why an Area Converter Saves You From Costly Mistakes

Errors in area conversion can be expensive. Property listings, government land records, architect drawings and farm subsidies each prefer a different unit. Confusing a hectare with an acre means being off by a factor of about 2.47, and mixing up square feet with square meters means being wrong by more than ten times. A trustworthy area converter removes that risk and saves the time you would otherwise spend hunting for a chart or double-checking a formula.

How to Use This Free Area Converter

The tool at the top of this page is designed to be fast on any screen. There is no convert button to press, because the result updates every time you change a number or a unit.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Type your number into the Enter area box. Decimals such as 12.5 and separators such as 1,250 or 12,50,000 all work.
  2. Choose the unit you are starting from in the From menu.
  3. Choose the unit you want in the To menu. The answer appears at once in the yellow result panel.
  4. Tap the round swap button to reverse the direction, or tap any tile under Your area in every unit to make it the target.
  5. Use Copy result to place the plain number on your clipboard, or Reset to return to the defaults.

Handy Features Built Into the Tool

  • Live results: the area converter recalculates on every keystroke, so you can try several values quickly.
  • Every unit at once: the tiles below the converter show your area in all 15 supported units, which is ideal when you are comparing a listing in one unit with a record in another.
  • Square plot preview: the side panel tells you how long each side of a square plot with your exact area would be, which helps you picture the size on the ground.
  • Precision and digit grouping: choose automatic precision or 2, 4 or 6 decimals, and switch between international (1,234,567) and Indian (12,34,567) digit grouping.
  • One-tap examples: chips such as “1 acre to m²” and “1 kanal to ft²” load popular conversions instantly.
  • Mobile friendly design: large touch targets, readable text and inputs that do not trigger zoom on iPhones make the converter comfortable to use on a small screen.

Area Units Explained: Metric, Imperial and Indian Land Units

This area converter supports 15 units in three families. Knowing where each unit is used helps you choose the right target for your situation.

Metric (SI) Area Units

The metric system builds every area unit from the meter. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures maintains the definitions of the International System of Units (SI), and the square meter is the derived SI unit for area.

Square Meter (m²)

A square meter is the area of a square with sides exactly one meter long. It is the standard for floor plans, apartments and property listings in most of the world.

Hectare (ha) and Are (a)

One hectare equals 10,000 m², the area of a square 100 meters on each side. An are is one hundredth of a hectare, or 100 m². Hectares are the usual choice for farmland, forests and large estates, and one hectare is about 2.47 acres.

Square Kilometer, Square Centimeter and Square Millimeter

The square kilometer (km²) suits cities, lakes and national parks, and equals 100 hectares. At the other end of the scale, cm² and mm² are used for tiles, circuit boards, paper and material samples.

Imperial and US Customary Units

Acre

The acre equals 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards. Based on the 1959 international yard, an international acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², which is the value used here. The older US survey acre is about 4,046.87 m², a difference of roughly two parts per million that only matters on very large surveys.

Square Foot, Square Yard and Square Inch

One square yard holds nine square feet, and one square foot holds 144 square inches. Because the international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 m, one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m². Agencies such as the NIST Office of Weights and Measures promote SI use and maintain the reference standards behind these customary units. In India the square yard is often called a gaj, and this converter labels it that way.

Square Mile

A square mile contains 640 acres and equals about 2.59 km². It appears mostly in US and UK geography, planning and population-density figures.

Indian and Pakistani Land Units

Many property deals in North India and Pakistan are still quoted in traditional units. These are the ones our area converter supports.

Marla and Kanal

One marla equals 272.25 ft² (30.25 yd²), and one kanal equals 20 marla, which is 5,445 ft² or 605 yd². Eight kanal make one acre. These are the standard values in Punjab and Haryana revenue records, and Haryana publishes its records through the state’s Jamabandi land records portal.

Guntha and Cent

A guntha is one fortieth of an acre, or 1,089 ft², and is used in parts of western and southern India such as Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana. A cent is one hundredth of an acre, or 435.6 ft², and is common in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Why Bigha and Biswa Are Not Included

The size of a bigha or biswa changes from state to state and sometimes from district to district. A single fixed factor would give misleading answers, so we leave these units out on purpose. If your document uses them, confirm the local definition and then convert through square feet or square meters.

Area Conversion Formulas (With Examples)

The Base-Unit Method

Behind the scenes, the area converter uses one dependable trick: it converts your value to square meters first and then into the unit you asked for. Every unit has a factor, which is simply the number of square meters in one of that unit.

Result = Value × (factor of From unit ÷ factor of To unit)

Example: to convert 2.5 acres to hectares, multiply 2.5 by 4,046.8564224 to get 10,117.14 m², then divide by 10,000. The answer is about 1.0117 ha.

Quick Mental Shortcuts

  • Square meters to square feet: multiply by about 10.764.
  • Acres to hectares: multiply by about 0.4047. Hectares to acres: multiply by about 2.471.
  • Kanal to marla: multiply by 20. Acres to kanal: multiply by 8.
  • Square yards to square feet: multiply by 9.

Try one on the tool: 3 kanal is 3 × 5,445 = 16,335 ft², which is about 1,517.57 m².

Why Squaring Matters

A common mistake is to reuse a length factor for area. One meter is 3.28084 feet, but one square meter is 10.7639 square feet, because area grows with the square of length (3.28084 × 3.28084 ≈ 10.764). If you double the side of a plot, its area does not double; it becomes four times larger. A good area converter handles this for you, which is one more reason to prefer a tool over mental arithmetic.

Real-World Uses of an Area Converter

Real Estate and Property

Builders often advertise flats in square feet, foreign listings use square meters, and village records may use kanal or marla. With an area converter you can compare a 1,200 ft² apartment against a 110 m² one, or check whether a 6 marla plot really matches the size shown in a brochure. Before you borrow against a purchase, run the numbers with the other free calculators and tools on Floan too.

Farming and Agriculture

Seed, fertiliser and pesticide guides are usually written per hectare, while many farmers think in acres, kanal or guntha. Converting correctly avoids over- or under-applying inputs, and it helps when you compare yields, rents or government support schemes that use different units.

Construction, Interiors and Design

Flooring, tiles, paint and roofing are priced per square foot or per square meter depending on the supplier. Contractors, interior designers and DIY owners use an area converter to match a quote with the size of a room and to order the right amount of material without paying for waste.

Students, Teachers and Engineers

Geometry homework, science projects and engineering drawings all move between units. The every-unit tiles and the square plot preview make the tool a friendly way to check answers and to build a feel for how large an acre, a hectare or a kanal actually is.

Tips for Accurate Area Conversions

  • Confirm the unit definition. A marla, kanal or cent can differ by region, so check which standard your document follows.
  • Round at the end. Keep the full precision through your working and round only the final answer. Use the Decimals menu to control how many places you see.
  • Watch the acre type. This converter uses the international acre. A US survey acre differs slightly and matters only on very large surveys.
  • Check official records for legal work. For registrations, mutations and loans, the figures in the government record always win over any online tool.
  • Compare like with like. Built-up area, carpet area and plot area are different measurements, even when they share a unit.

Please note: this area converter performs mathematical unit conversions. It does not replace a licensed surveyor or the official land record for legal, tax or registration purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Area Converter

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply the number of square meters by 10.7639. For example, 50 m² × 10.7639 = 538.2 ft². You can also select m² in the From menu and ft² in the To menu of the area converter and read the answer instantly.

How many square feet are in one acre?

One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet, which is the same as 4,840 square yards or about 4,046.86 square meters.

How many square meters are in a hectare?

One hectare equals 10,000 square meters. It is also about 2.471 acres or 107,639 square feet.

How many marla are in a kanal, and how many kanal are in an acre?

One kanal equals 20 marla, and one acre equals 8 kanal, or 160 marla. In square feet, one kanal is 5,445 ft² and one marla is 272.25 ft².

Is one marla always 272.25 square feet?

272.25 ft² is the standard marla used in Punjab and Haryana revenue records, and it is the value this area converter uses. In some other regions, including certain cities in Pakistan, a marla may be counted as 225 or 250 ft², so always confirm the local definition before a property deal.

Does this area converter support bigha and biswa?

No. The size of a bigha or biswa changes from state to state and sometimes from district to district, so one fixed factor would give misleading results. Check the unit definition in your local land records instead.

What is the difference between the international acre and the US survey acre?

The international acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², while the US survey acre is about 4,046.87 m², roughly two parts per million larger. The gap is far too small to matter for a house plot. This tool uses the international acre.

Is this area converter free, and is my data stored?

Yes, it is completely free and needs no sign-up. All calculations run in your browser, so the numbers you type are never uploaded or stored. It also works on phones, tablets and desktops.
